Binary black hole merger in the extreme mass ratio limit

چکیده
We discuss the transition from quasi-circular inspiral to plunge of a system of two nonrotating black holes of masses m1 and m2 in the extreme mass ratio limit m1m2 ≪ (m1+m2). In the spirit of the Effective One Body (EOB) approach to the general relativistic dynamics of binary systems, the dynamics of the two black hole system is represented in terms of an effective particle of mass μ ≡ m1m2/(m1 +m2) moving in a (quasi-)Schwarzschild background of mass M ≡ m1+m2 and submitted to an O(μ) radiation reaction force defined by Padé resumming high-order Post-Newtonian results. We then complete this approach by numerically computing, à la Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli, the gravitational radiation emitted by such a particle. Several tests of the numerical procedure are presented. We focus on gravitational waveforms and the related energy and angular momentum losses. We view this work as a contribution to the matching between analytical and numerical methods within an EOB-type framework. Resonant recoil in extreme mass ratio binary black hole mergers
The inspiral and merger of a binary black hole system generally leads to an asymmetric distribution of emitted radiation, and hence a recoil of the remnant black hole directed opposite to the net linear momentum radiated. The recoil velocity is generally largest for comparable mass black holes and particular spin configurations, and approaches zero in the extreme mass ratio limit. It is general...
متن کاملEccentricity of Supermassive Black Hole Binaries Coalescing from Gas Rich Mergers
Angular momentum loss to circumbinary gas provides a possible mechanism for overcoming the ‘last parsec’ problem and allowing the most massive black hole binaries formed from galactic mergers to coalesce. Here, we show that if gas disks also catalyze the merger of the somewhat lower mass binaries detectable with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), then there may be a purely gravitati...
متن کاملBinary black hole merger gravitational waves and recoil in the large mass ratio limit
Spectacular breakthroughs in numerical relativity now make it possible to compute spacetime dynamics in almost complete generality, allowing us to model the coalescence and merger of binary black holes with essentially no approximations. The primary limitation of these calculations is now computational. In particular, it is difficult to model systems with large mass ratio and large spins, since...
متن کاملThe evolution of circular, non-equatorial orbits of Kerr black holes due to gravitational-wave emission
An outstanding problem in general relativity is the evolution of binary systems with strong gravity and compact bodies. Although post-Newtonian approximations very successfully describe the evolution of such binaries when the bodies are widely separated [1], no approximation schemes work well when the bodies are close: in general, there is no small parameter that can be used to develop any appr...
متن کاملThe Final Spin from the Coalescence of Aligned-spin Black-hole Binaries
Determining the final spin of a black-hole (BH) binary is a question of key importance in astrophysics. Modelling this quantity in general is made difficult by the fact that it depends on the 7-dimensional space of parameters characterizing the two initial black holes. However, in special cases, when symmetries can be exploited, the description can become simpler. For black-hole binaries with u...
